Thursday, April 18, we brought a fun educational experience to the Lions Math and Science Christian Academy with DIY lava lamps for each student to make. Students ages 6-14 joined us in the academy's cafeteria ready to have fun while exploring the world of science.
We started this assembly with a brief explanation of how the experiment works with simple household items: water, vegetable oil, food coloring, and Alka-Seltzer tables. Then we gave each student the opportunity to make their own lava lamp, throwing an Alka-Seltzer tablet into their own cup full of water, vegetable oil, and just a few drops of food coloring. Together, we saw as the reaction caused colorful bubbles to fizz and float. We loved seeing the students' faces light up with excitement as they watched the mesmerizing reaction take place.
Our day with the Lions was also a great opportunity to get the students excited about our upcoming STEM Fair in collaboration with the academy. Just 10 days later, on Saturday, April 27, we came together at the Greenbelt Cultural Center for a day of fun and scientific exploration.
Seeing hundreds of community members, our Unity in the Community: Super Scientist Soar STEM Fair was a blast for the whole family. The day included mind-blowing experiments, exciting STEM activities, free food, giveaways, and lots of fun.
The students were a big part of the fun, with 35 young scientists from the academy presenting their science fair projects to attendees, as well as a panel of judges. They showed everyone that day that you're never too young to begin exploring the magical world of STEM.
Children of all ages also got to see how fun STEM can be through the various activities of the day. They built towers out of marshmallow and toothpicks. They saw the beautiful kaleidoscope of colors that appear when you put skittles in a plate full of milk. They even got to experiment with slime using their own slime-making kits.
We were so happy to see dozens of families enjoy the day’s activities together, opening themselves up to learning in this fun, unifying environment. It was truly incredible seeing family members of all ages participating in the activities, making this an event that was truly fun for the whole family.

And of course, because our goal is to help families soar to new heights, we had 11 community organizations & businesses present information about their resources. We are so grateful to all the organizations that joined us, working together to show our collective commitment to the community.
Thank you to everyone who attended our event and made it a huge success. Whether you attended as a sponsor, a science fair presenter, a community organization, or as an attendee, your participation means so much to the Family First Center. Thank you for joining us during this wonderful occasion and for being a part of our community.
